Industry First: Auto Focus Anamorphic Lenses

In the gritty trenches of indie filmmaking where every dollar fights for survival, a few heroes emerge to arm the rebels. Sirui stands tall among them—a beacon of cinematic rebellion, crafting anamorphic lenses that deliver Hollywood flair without the soul-crushing price tag.

At Write & Direct, we’ve unleashed the magic of their MFT anamorphic lineup with the Blackmagic Design Pocket 4K. Next we moved to the Saturn and Venus series on the BMD CC6K. The footage? Beautiful.

But hold the clapperboard: Sirui just dropped a bombshell that’s rewriting the script: The industry’s first auto-focus anamorphic lenses for full-frame sensors—a game-changer for solo filmmakers. For Blackmagic Design fans, you can now use your Cinema Camera 6K auto focus feature with an affordable, quality anamorphic lens!

This is huge. It’s massive. And the Sirui Kickstarter is officially live today: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sirui/sirui-astra-133x-ff-autofocus-anamorphic-lenses

Sirui Astra Focal Lengths

The Astra is 1.33x full frame glass that comes in three focal lengths: 50, 75 and 100mm. You can get them in either blue or neutral flare and they of course feature common cinema lens characteristics like focus ring, manual focus switch and high quality construction.

Astra F-Stop & Minimum Focus Distance

These auto focus anamorphic lenses can open up to T1.8 and have a minimum focus distance of about a foot and a half. They also close down to T22. These are all improvements over past anamorphic offerings from Sirui! On the shooting distance, it does change by lens. The 50 is a minimum focus distance of 1.64 feet. The 75 at 1.97 feet and the 100 at 2.3 feet. But they all go from T1.8 to T22.

Astra Lens Weight, Thread & Mount

The Astra lenses come in either E, Z or L mount and have a 67mm filter thread. The 50mm lens weighs in at 1.38lbs for L-Mount. The 75mm at 1.44lbs and the 100mm at 1.55lbs. Compare this to the lightweight Saturn 75mm at about one pound or the heavier Venus 75mm at about 3 pounds. Each Astra lens is just over 5 inches in length.

A Gimbal and Hand-Held Solution

For far too long, indie filmmakers running “Rebel Without A Crew” style have struggled with no 1st AC. Those of us itching to purchase products like DJI’s LiDAR for solo gimbal work on narrative can now invest in glass that does the work for us. Here at Write & Direct we can’t wait to throw an Astra lens on a BMD Cinema Camera 6K and see the results!
