SIRUI unveiled a new IronStar lens series. A lineup of 1.5x anamorphic cinema lenses designed for full-frame sensors. There will be three focal lengths at launch—35mm, 45mm, and 60mm—with more planned for the future. They will launch a crowd funding campaign for early discounts at the end of July. The lenses are for EF and PL mount.
SIRUI has unveiled a new IronStar series, a lineup of 1.5x anamorphic cine lenses designed for full-frame sensors. There will be three focal lengths at launch—35mm, 45mm, and 60mm—with five more planned for the future. They will launch a crow funding campaign for early discounts at the end of July.
The IronStar anamorphic lenses feature a fast T1.9 maximum aperture. The focus throw is a generous 270°, ideal for precise focus pulls. They also give a consistent 1.5x image vs the slight variances found in some of their other anamorphic lens sets.
The IronStar lenses feature a 92mm front filter thread and a 95mm outer diameter for clamp-on matte boxes, along with a 16-blade aperture for smooth bokeh. So obviously for many shops (like us) 92mm is larger than the 82-mm filter size we’ve selected as standard. So keep this in mind.
Sirui’s new 1.5x anamorphic lenses have a user interchangeable EF/PL Mount. PL caters to ARRI (they designed it), various RED cameras and Panavision while EF (designed by Canon) caters to Canon C100-C300, RED Komodo, Sony FX series, etc.
For Blackmagic Design, the IronStar would work with URSA or PYXIS cameras. The full frame Cinema Camera 6K is L mount. Since Sirui has joined the L- Mount Alliance, we’d be surprised if L-Mount options for the IronStar are not introduced. Or you can alternatively use a Viltrox EF-L adapter to use them on a Cinema Camera 6K.
The IronStar lenses boast a compact build but each weighs approximately 2.2lbs. So not as light as the Saturn series for you Ronin gimbal users out there. The IronStar will be more in the weight class of the Sirui Venus full frame lenses (pictured below).
The anamorphic elements are positioned in the middle of the lens rather than at the front or rear, which helps reduce both size and weight—a unique design choice. For example, their Saturn full frame positions the elements in the rear.
As with the Saturn lineup you can choose blue or neutral flare. The lenses are equipped with a removable support bracket featuring two 1/4″-20 mounting points, providing additional stability. The IronStar lenses offer 0.8 MOD gears for both focus and iris. And gear positions are standardized across all focal lengths for seamless lens changes.
If you’re on the hunt for quality anamorphic glass that will have large focal length coverage and you have an EF or PL mount camera—check out the crowd funding launch in July. But if you’re L mount or want super light full frame lenses, I’d consider snagging Sirui Saturn lenses while they’re on sale. We personally use the 35, 50 and 75mm Saturns with a 150mm Venus for sticks and ECU requirements.
It’s companies like Sirui that make independent filmmaking a possiblity. A decade ago, anamorphic lenses with full frame coverage were simply out of reach for most budgets.
