Write & Direct is designed to not just teach the craft of filmmaking, but prepare new directors to pursue their career after graduation. This is something most traditional film schools miss the mark on. The typical film school graduate has access to gear during school, but after graduation everything goes away. It’s the worst situation for any aspiring filmmaker.

With Write & Direct you pay a small amount for your education so you have money to purchase the gear you need to make movies. If you purchase everything below you will have what you need to make movies. And the craziest part? Everything below costs significantly less that one year of film school at California-based film schools.

Computer

Development

You'll need to decide on a computer soon as you will be using it during Development. Editing footage from cinema cameras and building a movie on a timeline requires A LOT from a computer. You can't cheap out here, or there will be regrets. Choose one of the options below, and these are minimum configurations. Feel free to upgrade further but don't go less.

Camera Packages

Pre-Production

Deciding on a camera packaged is not required for the Development phase of Write & Direct. But you will need to decide during Pre-Production. Two packages are listed below featuring Blackmagic Design Cinema Cameras. A 4K MFT and 6K Full Frame option.

The Pocket 4K and Cinema Camera 6K differences are discussed during the training. If you can spend a little more, the Cinema Camera 6K option is definitely the way to go.

Lighting

Pre-Production

Like most things, the cost of lighting has dropped significantly in the last 20 years! Now you can purchase high-quality LED lights for very little money.

Each of these items is important, from C-stands to a quality tripod. These are items used and tested by Write & Direct!

Gimbal

Pre-Production

One of the incredible changes to filmmaking gear in the last decade has been the gimbal. DJI leads the pack with their RONIN RS series. In the past, steady shots required a dolly (wildly expensive) or a steadicam operator (also expensive). Now incredible shots can be performed with a gimbal, which costs less than hiring a steadicam operator for a couple days on your shoot!

Production Sound

Pre-Production

Again, we learn a lot about equipment we used during production during Pre-Production in the Write & Direct training. Why? You'll be using a lot of this on tech scouts as you prepare for your shoot. Production sound involves a mic, field record and boom pole and/or mic stand. Solid options are listed below!

Post Sound

Post Production

Post sound design requires a quality set of headphones along with a pair of studio monitors. Below are cost effective, quality solutions we use in our own studio.

Color Grading

Post Production

Most begining filmmakers might assume all they need is a quality display to color grade their movies. But a lot more goes into accurate grading than this. Not only does Write & Direct teach how to color grade, we cover a quality, low-cost wap to do it accurately!
